MOUNT LAUREL, NJ — The Mount Laurel Police Department (MLPD) is reminding residents and drivers that the New Jersey Safe Passing Law went into effect on March 1.

The new law provides clear rules of the road for all motorists about when and how to pass people sharing the road on foot, bikes and other non-motor vehicles that are legally permitted to travel. The Safe Passing Law requires drivers to use “due-caution” when they see vulnerable civilians on the road.

Under the law:

  • Drivers must follow all current no-passing, no speeding laws AND move over to an open lane if one is available.
  • On a single-lane road, drivers must allow at least a 4-foot safety zone when passing a pedestrian, cyclist or other non-motor vehicle.
  • If 4 feet is not possible on a section of road, drivers must slow to 25 MPH and be prepared to stop until they can pass safely without endangering those sharing the roadway.

The Safe Passing Law joins the Move Over Law and Crosswalk Stop Law, which require motorists to move over or slow down for first responders and stop for people crossing in crosswalks. The goal of all these laws is to reduce injuries and fatalities and prevent near misses.

2021 was one of the deadliest years on New Jersey roads in decades, according to data from the New Jersey State Police. Last year, 703 people were killed in crashes, including 222 pedestrians and 23 cyclists. It was the deadliest year on record for pedestrians in New Jersey since 1983 when 229 pedestrians were killed and the deadliest year for cyclists since 1999 when 24 cyclists were killed.
