Murphy’s Law: Ten Wins and Wake-up Call - WHO TV 13 Des Moines News & Weather
AMES, Iowa -- We hear a lot about reducing carbon dioxide emissions when it comes to controlling the threat of climate change, but a new study from Iowa State University suggests looking into another major greenhouse gas. It’s called Nitrous Oxide, and it largely comes from agricultural soil, specifically poor draining soil. Even though nitrous oxide accounts for just 7% of all greenhouse gasses emitted, it’s actually way more potent than carbon dioxide. “Just a small amount has a large impact on the climate. So if we're comparing it to carbon dioxide, a given mass of nitrous oxide has about 300 times the warming potential, over 100 years as that carbon dioxide does,” said Steven Hall, an associate professor at Iowa State University. DES MOINES, Iowa -- As the omicron coronavirus variant spreads around the country, the Polk County Health Department has noticed an increase in children receiving their pediatric vaccine. According to the health department, the demand has always been there for pediatric doses of the Pfizer vaccine. But now around the holiday season the demand is increasing. A 46-year-old Des Moines man was shot outside the Maingate Bar and Grill in the 2900 block of E. Grand Avenue near the Iowa State Fairgrounds just before 10 p.m. on Dec. 2. The man remains hospitalized in critical condition as of Sunday evening, authorities said. ISU scientists: Nitrous oxide emissions should factor into climate change mitigation
