Natrona County Sheriff's Sergeant shares her experience as a woman in law enforcement - Wyoming News Now

CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Tuesday, March 8 is International Woman’s Day. The theme of IWD for 2022 is #BreaktheBias.

One sergeant says that from her 18 years of working for the Natrona County Sheriff’s Office, there isn’t much bias to break.

“I’m fortunate to work for a department and in a community where women in law enforcement were readily accepted as just a part of the workforce,” said NCSO Sergeant Katie Preciado.

Preciado began working for the sheriff’s office at the detention center in 2004. Since then, she has worked her way up the ranks to become a Sergeant on Patrol.

A 2019 FBI survey found that just under 13% of law enforcement officers are women. According to 2021 data from PEW Trusts, only 4% of state policing agencies are women.

“It makes me proud to know that I am representing women in this field and I think I shine a good light on an area where we could use more women,” said Preciado.

At the NCSO, Preciado says she feels that her coworkers treat her as an equal both out on the street and at the jail.

“I’ve never felt from anybody in this department or any of the sister agencies less than or not as capable. I feel that women in law enforcement have different capabilities, I bring something different to the table that you might not see from a male officer, but we all play our roles and we all work together as a team and play our strength,” said Preciado.

She hopes more women will join her in working in law enforcement, to bring maternal instinct that might help lighten up tense scenarios. In her experience, some victims prefer speaking to a woman about their situations, as they find her more comforting.

“I think it’s important for young women and girls to realize that even if you view something as a male-dominated field, it doesn’t mean that you aren’t perfectly capable to bring your strengths to that field and maybe shine a light on something that may have been missed before,” said Preciado.
