Nemphos Braue launches cannabis law practice - Baltimore Business Journal - Baltimore Business Journal
A boutique law firm in Towson has hired an attorney to lead a new practice focused on serving clients in Maryland's fast-growing cannabis industry.
Bill Huber joins Nemphos Braue LLC as an of-counsel at the Baltimore County firm. Prior, Huber was in-house counsel for iAnthus Capital Holdings Inc., a large multinational cannabis firm headquartered in New York. He also co-founded LMS Wellness Benefit LLC, a licensed medical marijuana dispensary that does business as Health For Life near White Marsh.
Huber also has experience in the health care space, having served as in-house counsel for numerous companies including UnitedHealth Group, Magellan Health and Maxim Healthcare Services.
George Nemphos, co-founder and managing member of Nemphos Braue, said in a statement Huber's combination of experience in health care and cannabis makes him the right fit to lead the firm's newest practice.
"Part of what makes us a different kind of law firm is our versatility and ability to address the growing needs of our client base," Nemphos said. "Adding Bill to the team positions us right at the intersection of cannabis and healthcare with entrepreneurs and emerging businesses, and allows Nemphos Braue to continue serving our clients, not just as their counsel, but also as a strategic business partner in a complex and thriving area."
Nemphos Braue intends to support clients at all stages and in all areas of the cannabis industry, from cultivation to processing to dispensaries. Potential clients could include investors, service providers and partners who are involved with business pursuits in and around cannabis.
The firm is starting its cannabis practice at an opportune time. Maryland's medical cannabis industry has continued to grow since launching in late 2017. William Tilburg, executive director of the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission, said last month the state's dispensaries have brought in about $429 million so far this year, putting the industry on pace to hit over $575 million in sales by the end of 2021. That would represent an increase of about 28% from $450 million in 2020.
A growing list of states have also legalized marijuana for recreational use. While Maryland is not among the 18 states that have legalized marijuana so far, the General Assembly will again consider the possibility during the 2022 legislative session that begins in January.
Nemphos, a former Duane Morris attorney, and Tim Braue, founded Nemphos Braue in 2017. The firm provides legal services ranging from intellectual property, capital raises and financing to buying or selling a business, mergers and acquisitions and general corporate counsel.
