New Homeland Law Locks in $2.25M E. Industrial Road Reconstruction for Branford - Zip06.com
Branford —
With the signing of H.R. 2741 on Tuesday, March 15, President Joseph Biden signed into law the 2022 Federal Homeland Security bill which includes providing a $2.25 million grant to the Town of Branford to fund the full reconstruction of East Industrial Road in Branford, from Leetes Island Road to the southbound Interstate 95 exit ramps.
On March 9, U.S. Congresswoman/House Appropriations Committee Chair Rosa DeLauro (D, District 3), introduced the federal spending package and also announced the Branford funding had been secured among $13,662,455 in Community Project Funding for the state's 3rd Congressional District. Branford was one of 8 communities to benefit; North Branford will also receive funding from the package (see related story).
"Dedicated groups and organizations across Connecticut are working hard to boost our economy, support hardworking families, and keep our communities safe, they simply needed the funding to succeed," said DeLauro, in part, in a press release issued March 9.
She noted the Branford East Industrial Road project, which spans 0.35 miles, will provide a boost to the region as a project vital to economic development and growth which will serve the towns of Branford, Guilford, North Branford, and beyond. The release noted the full reconstruction will provide access to Stop & Shop on Leetes Island Road as well as "...numerous restaurants, retailers, breweries and vineyards, the local YMCA, farms, medical facilities, manufacturing and biotech facilities, distribution hubs, hotels, local shellfish processing facilities, public trails, and the Stony Creek Quarry featuring their distinctive pink granite."
Shortly after the funding passed was passed by House Appropriations Committee in July, 2021, DeLauro came to Branford to visit the East Industrial Road site together with Branford First Selectman Jamie Cosgrove. At that time, Cosgrove said the Town of Branford was grateful to have the East Industrial Road reconstruction project considered for Community Project Funding of $2,250,000.
"East Industrial Road serves as the main access road from Interstate 95 to a significant multi-town region that is ripe for development and redevelopment," said Cosgrove. "The project will address the need for vehicular and pedestrian safety, as well as provide improved infrastructure to facilitate economic growth."
