New law aims to protect students from sexual abuse - khqa.com
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WICS) —A new law is aiming to protect your student from sexual abuse.
Governor JB Pritzker signed in Faith's Law on Dec. 4, 2021.
The bill was named after Faith Colson, who was sexually assaulted while in high school in Schaumburg, Illinois.
Faith's law requires all school districts have a code of conduct and a resource guide for parents on what they can do if their child is a victim of sexual abuse.
Sean Black from the Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault says education and awareness is key considering how vulnerable children are.
"Children must know that there is help there," Black said. "If the school system has policies in place that are followed than children know they can go to a trusted person and they will get help."
The new legislation also incorporates training for teachers on child sexual abuse and sexual harassment.
The bill has various dates that it goes into effect.
