CAPITAL REGION, NY (WRGB) — Governor Hochul has signed a bill into law that gives the public more input in policy making decisions by state agencies.

The bill now allows the public to submit a petition that could lead to a public hearing about proposed policy.

The new law requires certain state agencies to give access to the public about proposed policy changes, utilizing teleconferencing and different types of technology to hold hearings.

The new law says If the public creates a petition with at least 125 signatures about a proposed policy change, then an agency must hold a hearing. Hearings can be during nights and weekends, and can be held digitally to expand their reach.

This is a three-year pilot program where seven agencies will participate, including the Department of Health, Department of Labor and the Department of Education.

Agencies are required to give due consideration to requests that a hearing be held in a particular region.

Governor Hochul says this legislation can help expand public input into the work of the state.

CBS 6 spoke to several good government groups, one of them likes the idea of holding night or weekend hearings, since hearings are often held during the day, when people may not be able to attend them.
