A new law already signed by Governor Janet Mills aims to keep trash from Massachusetts and New Hampshire away from Maine landfills.

For nearly two decades, out-of-state trash has been piling up at the Juniper Ridge landfill in Old Town, accounting for roughly a third of the waste there.

Some locals, including members of the Penobscot Nation, say it's time that stops.

“All this construction debris, which is lead, arsenic, PFAS, and it all feeds into this toxic landfill leachate and it’s taken to a local wastewater treatment plant to be is processed. Then it’s discharged into the Penobscot River,” said Sarah Nichols, with the Natural Resources Council of Maine.

Out-of-state garbage is now banned from being dumped in that landfill.
