New Law in Village of Oxford sparks petition among residents - WBNG-TV
OXFORD (WBNG) -- A New law in the Village of Oxford has some members ready to take action.
According to the 'NYS Opt-Out Legislation' A city, town or village is allowed to 'opt-out' of licensing and establishing retail cannabis dispensaries as well as onsite cannabis consumption.
As of the evening of Oct. 12, the Village Board of Trustees voted in favor of this law, enacting its powers immediately.
Some residents say they did not receive information about this vote until after the vote had taken place. Jessica Henninge with Promote Oxford Now says having this law is more than just about cannabis or a dispensary.
"We're doing so many more things to bring more community members here to make this a place that everyone wants to live and be at the end enjoy and proud of that and we also want to bring our sales and business to our local businesses, we have really awesome small little businesses here that we want everyone to see that we want everybody to benefit from."
This law has yet to reach the Town of Oxford, however, members of the community say they expect that hearing to happen within a short amount of time. For now, Henninge says she is working on a petition in hopes to overturn the vote in the Village.
12 News has not heard back from the Mayor's office despite reaching out.
