New law leads to unprecedented donation to Maine schools - WMTW Portland

PORTLAND, Maine —

Thousands of Maine students have better access to free menstrual products thanks to a new state law and unprecedented donation.

Gov. Janet Mills signed LD 952, An Act To Limit Liability Regarding Donations of Menstrual Products into law in June 2021. It provides immunity from civil and criminal liability for good faith donors of period products, including manufacturers and health care facilities, and extends the same protection to the schools and other nonprofit establishments that distribute the products.

Following the adoption of that law, U by Kotex donated 100,000 menstrual products to 10 schools in southern Maine. They were distributed by Michael Klahr Jewish Family Services.

"This donation has the potential to help thousands of Mainers who menstruate, including students who may struggle to access free menstrual products," said Adam Seigal, manager of Michael Klahr Jewish Family Services. "A donation of this size and caliber is rare and allows us to impact our community in a variety of ways. My hope is that more donations are on the horizon now that the process is easier for manufacturers."

The Maine Senate Majority Office says a recent report found that one in five teenagers have had difficulty affording period products and more than four in five have either missed time in school or know someone who has because they could not access these products.
