New Law Permits Alcohol at Four Town Park - TAPinto.net

YORKTOWN, N.Y. – Alcoholic drinks are now legal at several town parks as a result of a new law that was approved by the Town Board last week.

But it won’t be a free-for-all, said Parks and Recreation Superintendent Jim Martorano Jr.

“This does not mean we can have alcohol in all of our parks,” Martorano said at the board’s meeting on Tuesday, March 1. “That’s not what we’re looking to do here.”

A town permit will be required to sell or consume alcohol at Railroad Park and the Par 3 golf course on Route 6. Consumption will also be allowed at Downing Park and the Sparkle Lake service building, but sales will not.

“If they’re going to be selling alcohol, they also need to the State Liquor Authority to approve that as well,” said Town Supervisor Matt Slater. “So, it does require multiple layers of approval before it’s allowed.”

Martorano said the Par 3 golf course seemed like a logical place to allow alcohol sales and consumption, given that the property and clubhouse have been redeveloped and will soon open to the public. Railroad Park, similarly, hosts many town events.

Residents and organizations often request to rent out Downing Park and the Sparkle Lake service building for gatherings. “And they do request alcohol consumption, but we’ve had to deny them in the past,” Martorano said.

The elected officials wholeheartedly endorsed the legislation, which amends Chapter 108, Section 7 of the town code.

“I think it’s a long time coming,” said Councilman Sergio Esposito.

MASK MANDATES

The Town Board announced that as of Tuesday, March 1, Yorktown, in accordance with New York State Law, is ending its mask mandate. Face coverings will now be optional in all town buildings. This also applies to schools and businesses that required masks for entry.

Councilman Tom Diana said that wearing a mask should be a personal choice.

“Please, no mask shaming. People will either wear them or they won’t,” Diana said. “If you see someone that does, that’s fine. If you see someone that doesn’t, that’s fine, too…It’s a great thing. We’re on the mend, folks, and this is how we want to keep it.”

RISING OIL PRICES

Diana also discussed the recent price increase of oil. He advised Yorktown residents to keep an eye on their bills and to contact their oil providers sooner rather than later.

“As many of you know, I’m in the oil business. Oil prices for me went up 20 cents today per gallon,” Diana said. If any of you folks are on an oil burner, you may want to talk to your provider and be put on a budget plan. “It’s not going to go down anytime soon.”

Following Diana’s advice, Town Supervisor Matt Slater offered a solution to those who may be struggling to afford their oil bill.

“We do have the Yorktown heating oil plan,” Slater said. “Residents can contact our supervisor’s office and the staff will gladly assist you in understanding what the program is and have a list of participating companies.”
