New law prohibits restaurants from giving out plastic utensils without request - KIMA CBS 29

Starting January 1, 2022, if you are at a restaurant and want plastic utensils “to go” with your food, you will have to ask for them.
Jennifer Hahn, owner of Papa Baird's, says she is all for the new state law that says restaurants cannot give out plastic, single-use items such as spoons or forks unless the customer asks.
Hahn added they have been doing this since the beginning of the year and it has actually helped them save money.
Hahn says, “when we've been asking people, it saves. At least gone by half, cause we would go through a lot and so much of it would go to waste so it's nice to save that money."
Plastic utensils, plastic straws, ketchup or sauce packets and cup lips for drinks are all included in this new law.
Action News spoke to Jaylin Cantrell and Donald Davis as they were eating at Papa Baird's to see what they have to say about this change.
Cantrell said, “i'm in favor of it because, it's not completely 'say no' to it, it's just limiting it and if you don't remember then that's on you, not the restaurant.”
Davis added, “it's probably a good thing, cause we live in Terrace Heights and we get a lot of plastic garbage basically that falls out of people's vehicles on the way to the dump, so we have personal experience- especially with plastic.”
Hanh says they are going to look into additional ways to make Papa Baird's even more environmentally friendly, such as replacing plastic straws with metal straws.
Hahn says, “we even talked about selling some steel straws or some reusable straws would be kind of a cool thing. And actually a lot of people are like, "that'd be really cool", so we might look into that.”
This initiative is similar to the plastic bag ban in grocery stores, however in this case you will not be paying extra for plastic utensils, you just have to remember to ask for them.
