New law requires olive oil producers to show percent grown in California - KRCRTV.COM
NORTHSTATE AREA, Calif. — Assembly Bill 535 was written by Cecilia Aguiar-Curry and signed by Governor Gavin Newsom in October 2021 and went into effect on January 1. The bill requires olive oil manufactures to label what percentage of their oil is grown outside of California if 100% is not grown in-state.
Raymond Rodgers owns Corning Olive Oil and said he supports the bill because he is already using 100% California-grown olives for all of his bottlings.
“If you put California Olive Oil, and it’s not from California, you have to put down a certain percentage that it is California olive oil. And I think that’s great," Rodgers said. “The olive oil I make, I guarantee it comes from Tehama, Glenn, or Butte County...period. I don’t buy any foreign oils; I haven’t bought foreign oils. I think it’s a great bill. I think it should have been a long time ago. Kind of like the wine industry, I think it’s a good deal.”
Rodgers said the new law helps local growers and ensures consumers are getting 100% California-grown olive oil with no additives.
“A lot of people that I do business with are just local farmers that I’ll crush their olives, make oil and then they bottle it and take it to the farmers market and stuff," Rodger said. "I guarantee it’s 100% from wherever their farm is."
Corning produces the most olive oil in the country, and Rodgers said he is glad they'll be able to showcase it through the new bill, but for everyone to make the switch it could take some time.
“I don’t know how long they're going to give them before they comply with them because they’ve already bought a lot of oil that uses some foreign oil," Rodger said. "So they should say they got two months to comply or something like that, and then hopefully the California Olive Oil Council will check it.”
