VICKSBURG, Mich. — Transportation officials in southwest Michigan say it’s becoming more common than ever for people to fly by school buses that are stopped with their lights flashing and stop signs out.

Under a Michigan law that took effect last week, they can fight back by with cameras attached to buses, that record video police can use to cite drivers.

Previously law enforcement officers had to see the infraction first hand, or a bus driver had to take in and report details, all while watching out for students.

“The drivers come in every day telling me someone ran my red lights,” said Karen McKinstry, Transportation Director for Vicksburg Community Schools.

Drivers who illegally pass school buses can be ticketed up to $500 dollars based on video footage from on-board cameras.

In Vicksburg, McKinstry said a driver was cited Monday after passing a school bus.

Soon every single person who illegally passes will be referred to law enforcement, she said, as kinks in the system are worked out.

“What it’s going to help with is us being able to identify those people that are doing the running,” she said. “Then as they get their fines and are charged, then hopefully we’ll see that stop. When they see we’re serious, when they see we really mean it, when they get a big fine.”
