New rule aims to make 'ghost guns' more visible to law enforcement - KEZI TV
SALEM, Ore. -- President Joe Biden has announced a new crackdown on "ghost guns," and now police in Springfield are hopeful it will make it easier to solve crimes.
These guns have no serial number, making them hard to track. A person can buy kits that include a receiver that's only 80% complete and can finish putting them together with other readily-available tools.
“There's no checks and balances behind who has these. I have no idea how many can be out there,” said Sgt. Justin Myers of the Springfield Police Department.
On Monday, Biden used his executive powers to expand the definition of firearms to cover ghost guns.
It's something that FBI special agent Kieran Ramsey said is needed across the country.
“The fact that we are seeing these show up in the street more and more -- there is an increase seizure rate across the country and that is reflective here in Oregon,” Ramsey said.
The new rule will hopefully make the kits similar to firearms under federal law. That means manufacturers who sell them have to be licensed and background checks must be run for potential buyers. It's a step toward making the number of ghost guns more visible to law enforcement.
"Knowing that it makes it that much harder for law enforcement to trace these back to where they're being obtained from, it just adds to the complexity of our jobs,” Ramsey said.
