New Virginia law will crack down on 'farm use' tags - WCYB

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Va. — Some agriculture representatives say they are in support of a new Virginia law that will require farmers to purchase their 'farm use' plates at the Department of Motor Vehicles.
Farmers have historically been able to purchase their 'farm use' tags at a store or insurance provider outside of the DMV to indicate a vehicle designated for agriculture purposes, but Virginia laws will change that option beginning next year.
“Part of the use of the farm use tag was for vehicle used strictly for agriculture production, vehicles like trucks that may have been used only seasonally on the farm, and vehicles that were using for hauling product or getting product for the farm," Washington County extension agent Phil Blevins told News 5.
Washington County treasurer Fred Parker, who also oversees a DMV Select location inside of the county offices, says the new law limits those who have previously abused it.
“When you see them on high-end, decked out pickup trucks that probably aren’t farm vehicles or you see them on a passenger car, those people are skirting the law, they’re skirting the registration, the insurance, the taxes we all pay," Parker said.
Blevins said this new law is considered a protection for farmers.
“Agriculture really doesn’t want to use, or lose I should say, the privilege or benefit of having that for vehicles strictly used for agriculture production on a farm," Blevins told us.
The DMV-issued farmuse plate is significantly cheaper than buying standard plates and does not have to be renewed.
“DMV hasn’t sent down the set formulas yet that we’re going to have to follow, but it is our understanding that you’re going to have to have a farm or be leasing a farm. You’re going to have to certify that you have insurance on the vehicle. You will get a one-time permanent tag for that farm vehicle for $15," Parker said.
The new law goes into effect July 1, 2023.
Officials say the reason they are educating on the law so early is to allow customers to purchase the plates as they renew tags during the year.
