New workplace laws take effect today | Business | journalinquirer.com - Journal Inquirer

A new Connecticut law requiring employers to disclose salary ranges for a vacant position will take effect Friday.

Under Public Act 21-30, which Gov. Ned Lamont signed into law in June, employers must disclose the salary range for an open position to job applicants either at their request or before or at the time an employer offers them the position, according to a Connecticut Business and Industry Association press release.

Employers must also disclose salary ranges to existing employees if there is a change in the employee’s position, or at the employee’s first request, the CBIA said.

The law defines salary range as “the range of wages an employer anticipates relying on when setting wages for a position,” and may refer to any applicable pay scale, previously determined range of wages for the position, actual range of wages for employees currently holding comparable positions, or the employer’s budgeted amount for the position.

The statute also modifies language of the state’s current mandate on gender-based wage discrimination, which prohibits employers from paying employees different wages for equal work based on sex. The new law substitutes the “equal work standard” with a “comparable work standard,” defined as a combination of “skill, effort, and responsibility and performed under similar working conditions,” the law says.

Another workplace law banning employers from requesting or requiring job applicants to provide their age, date of birth, or dates of attendance at or graduation from an educational institution on a job application also takes effect Friday, the CBIA said. Some exceptions apply, such as if age-related information is required to comply with state or federal law.
