New Year means new laws go into effect starting January 1st - WEAR
PENSACOLA, Fla. -- A new year in Florida means new laws are taking effect starting Saturday.
One of the new laws is the Child Safety Alarm Act.
It took effect in October, but enforcement starts now that the new year has begun.
The new law requires all child care facilities to have alarms in vehicles transporting children.
Reminding drivers to check for kids before walking away.
"It was largely supported, nearly unanimously supported by the entire Florida legislature," State Representative Alex Andrade said.
Andrade says the goal is to prevent incidents like the one that happened in Escambia County in 2017. When a 3-year-old was left alone in a hot daycare van and later died.
"We've seen it across the state over several years.," Andrade said. "It's such a preventable occurrence."
Another law taking effect is Senate Bill 566. It creates taxation, insurance, and operational requirements for peer-to-peer car-sharing programs.
"This bill is designed to incorporate some of the consumer protections that we have in statute for rental car companies for this type of peer-to-peer car-sharing programs," Andrade said.
The sunshine state kicked off the new year with a set of changes. Lawmakers hope to keep that same momentum all of 2022.
"Making sure that we're continuing to track the things that have made us successful in this next year is something that is very important to me," Andrade said.
