NextGEN Law: Lance Parmer, Lehr Middlebrooks Vreeland & Thompson - Birmingham Business Journal - Philadelphia Business Journal

Practice area(s): Labor and Employment Law

Years practicing: 8

Law school: Cumberland School of Law

Why did you decide to be a lawyer? I have always been a bit of a history nerd and, regardless of era, many of the most interesting and impactful people in history were lawyers or jurists at some point in their career.

What project/case/client has most influenced your career and why? I recently represented an employer in a union decertification campaign. The client’s employees voted convincingly to become union free after 50 years of union representation. The experience reinforced my passion for labor law and my belief in the process.

Who has been someone who has inspired your legal career (can be a real person or a fictional character)? My parents are small business owners. Witnessing their experiences with employment issues inspired me to pursue employment law as a career path.

What's the biggest misconception people have about lawyers from TV shows/movies? I think the biggest misconception is that lawyers are always in the courtroom. In reality, the vast majority of legal work takes place outside of the courtroom and, in civil litigation, trials are becoming more and more of a rarity.

What has been your greatest accomplishment so far in your legal career? My greatest accomplishment thus far was being named a partner in my firm. I work with some brilliant attorneys, and I am honored to be counted as a partner among them.

What's on top of your career bucket list? Arguing a case before the United States Supreme Court

What's the hot topic in your practice area? Covid-19 related employment issues remain the hot topic right now. On a somewhat related note, ADA and FMLA litigation seems to be increasing as well.

What's your favorite thing about being an attorney? My favorite thing about being an attorney is schedule flexibility. Though the time requirements can be quite demanding, I am largely able to control my schedule. With two (soon three) small children, schedule flexibility is extremely important to me.

How has the Covid-19 pandemic impacted your practice area? The pandemic has had a huge impact on employers, and our firm has helped employers across the country to address a host of related issues, including emergency leave laws, mask/vaccine requirements, work-from-home policies, safety protocols, and much more.

What's your favorite legal TV show or movie? A Few Good Men, hands down.

If you could make any change to improve metro Birmingham, what would it be? I would love to see the continued revitalization and growth of downtown Birmingham. The improvements made over the last 10 years have been incredible. The city has so much untapped potential and many people and businesses are starting to notice.
