Why did you decide to be a lawyer? I was an economics major in college and decided to attend law school to be able to apply the critical thinking skills I had learned in economics to legal issues and to feed my love of history in the process.
Who has been someone who has inspired your legal career (can be a real person or a fictional character)? One of my mentors is Leonard Wertheimer, who practiced law for over 40 years. While he and I worked together, he regularly met with me to discuss not only what we were doing but the why behind it. I believe every lawyer should have a mentor like that.
What’s the biggest misconception people have about lawyers from TV shows/movies? That most attorneys spend a good bit of their time in court or yelling. In fact, I spend most of my days meeting with people to hear about their families and whatever issues they may be concerned about.
What’s your favorite legal TV show or movie? One of the first legal books I ever read was “The Firm.” I loved all of the twists and turns in the book that were also in the movie.
What has been your greatest accomplishment so far in your legal career? I try very hard to help clients achieve their goals, which hopefully I have grasped as our relationship moves forward. Many of my clients let me know their goals, and it is wonderful to be a part of their life journey as they achieve those goals.
What’s the hot topic in your practice area? Given the change in control in Washington, there has been much talk this year as to what the potential tax law changes might be and how to plan in light of those. What’s your favorite thing about being an attorney? I love the friendships I make with my clients. My clients and their stories never cease to fascinate me.
How has the Covid-19 pandemic impacted your practice area? Like most people, I have attended a lot of Zoom calls over the last year and a half. Therefore, I have met with many clients to discuss planning and even execute documents in this modern format.
If you could make any change to improve metro Birmingham, what would it be? I would address the timing of red lights, whether that is through an automated system or coordination between the lights. Research shows that such would reduce pollution, reduce drivers’ stress and reduce traffic on the road.
