Noah Phillips, former DA candidate, forming new law practice - Sacramento Business Journal - The Business Journals

Former Sacramento County district attorney candidate Noah Phillips is starting his own law firm.

Phillips, 50, spent the first 20 years of a his legal career working as a prosecutor for the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office. While there, he participated in over 100 trials including complex criminal matters such as homicides and ultimately took on a supervisor role where he managed between 20 and 30 attorneys.

In 2018, he unsuccessfully ran for district attorney against incumbent Anne Marie Schubert. After that, he left the District Attorney's Office to form a new private practice with Kevin Hughey called Hughey Phillips LLP (now Hughey Gentry LLP), where he spent the past four years.

"My transition has been in the works for some time and it was always understood I'd eventually develop my own practice," Phillips said. "I'm deeply appreciative of Kevin and everyone at Hughey Gentry for the opportunity over the last four years to hone my legal skills in the areas of general civil litigation, business law and serious personal injury matters. I look forward to partnering with them on some of their many philanthropic interests in the near future."

Near the end of 2021, Phillips and his partners felt the practice was well-positioned and agreed it was a good time to make the transition, he said. Earlier this year, he branched off and created Noah Phillips Law.

With his new firm, Phillips said he plans to handle matters including complex criminal defense cases, general civil litigation and serious personal injury. Over the past four years, he's also made connections at the state Capitol, where he's participated in lobbying for campaigns regarding legal issues. He said he plans to continue lobbying and developing those relationships.

"At the end of the day, when you own your own practice, all of the responsibility falls on you," Phillips said. "There are positive and negatives to that, but I've been ready to take this step for some time now and I'm looking forward to it."

He plans to hire another lawyer to join his firm on a part-time basis, as well as staff. Noah Phillips Law currently operates out of 500 Capitol Mall in Sacramento.

As for a potential second go at the district attorney position, Phillips isn't ruling it out.

"Never say never, but at this point my sole focus is representing the clients I currently have and making my new venture a success," he said.
