Noem will sign transgender bill into law today - KELOLAND.com
SIOUX FALLS, S.D (KELO) — Gov. Kristi Noem will be signing Senate Bill 46 which she says protects fairness in women’s sports at 4 p.m. CT today in the Capitol rotunda, according to a news release. The bill becomes law with the Governor’s signature.
Noem will have a news conference following the signing.
Noem and supporters of the bill say it protects females by not allowing transgender female athletes to participate in girls’ or women’s sports.
Opponents said the bill discriminates against transgender females and that state high school association and NCAA rules address transgender athlete participation in sports.
Senate Bill 46 does not ban transgender males from participating in boys or men’s sports.
The transgender bill into law will be a victory for Noem after at least two defeats in recent days. Her heartbeat-based abortion bill didn’t make it out of a House panel. Also, Noem had announced a plan to expand campground sites at Custer State Park but that failed even after a major revision.
Thursday Ag markets, February 3.
