Officials consider expanding new Law Enforcement Center after it's completed - KTIV
SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - Woodbury County officials heard a proposal Monday to expand the Law Enforcement Center even though the complex is not yet finished and is over budget due to building costs associated with COVID-19.
The chairman of the LEC Authority says the county has lots of departments that could move out to the new building. But any expansion would have to come after the initial structure is built.
The building will house a new jail, juvenile detention facility, and the sheriff’s office.
At Monday’s meeting, the LEC Authority heard a proposal to add the county’s building services to the building, and perhaps even include the human resources department.
LEC officials stressed the meeting was purely for potential planning purposes.
“This is not our first meeting and won’t be the last obviously, but we have additional space available out where the law enforcement authority will be or is being built. And what we’re doing is we’re trying to do some future thinking,” said Ron Wieck, the chairman of the LEC Authority.
The new jail at the complex could house up to 148 prisoners from other jurisdictions, generating the county money, according to plans on the LEC’s website.
The original cost for the complex was estimated at about $50 million. But according to the chairman, that cost has ballooned past $60 million because of construction costs associated with the pandemic.
Further expansion would take more funding.
