Oklahoma lawmaker files bills mirroring Florida's 'Don't Say Gay' law - KOCO Oklahoma City
OKLAHOMA CITY —
An Oklahoma lawmaker says he has filed two bills that mirror Florida's "Don't Say Gay" law.
The first bill, House Bill 1074, would prohibit school educators from teaching students in kindergarten through fifth grade about sexual orientation or gender identity. The measure also would direct any curriculum taught in grades six through 12 must be age and developmentally appropriate for students.
A news release says House Bill 1074 also would require each school board to adopt procedures notifying a student's parents or guardian "if there is a change in a student's services related to their mental health, emotional, or physical health or well-being, and the school’s ability to provide a safe and supportive learning environment for the student."
The second bill would prohibit anyone under 18 from undergoing gender reassignment treatment in Oklahoma. House Bill 1076 says any physician who performs the treatment would be subject to professional discipline by the Oklahoma State Medical Board and could receive a suspended or revoked license.
State Sen. Nathan Dahm filed both bills.
"There is absolutely no reason we should be teaching or talking about sexual orientation or gender identity in elementary school," Dahm said in a statement. "Kids need to be learning their ABCs and how to read and write – not that a man can be a woman if he feels like it, or vice versa. I applaud the state of Florida for enacting this measure, and call on my colleagues in Oklahoma to follow their lead and do the right thing to protect our children."
