Oklahoma state senator proposes 'Kyle's Law' - KOKH FOX25
BROKEN ARROW, Okla. (KTUL) — It was one of those trials that had the nation watching and when it was over Senator Nathan Dahm thought...
"We want to make sure that something similar doesn’t happen to the people of Oklahoma," he said.
From his perspective Kyle Rittenhouse should have never been charged, saying that the video evidence showed it was lawful self-defense. So here in Oklahoma the Senator is proposing a bill called Kyle's Law.
"It ensures that if somebody is charged with murder and then found not guilty for reasons of self-defense that they will not have to bear the costs of the lawyer and the courts and all that stuff, that that would be covered by the state," he said.
"To propose a law like this is kind of proposing this idea that one can argue self-defense in any act of violence and then be free from those charges," said Carmyn Taylor.
Taylor's perspective is formed in part from participation in a demonstration on I-244 last summer and an encounter with a truck.
"Both of my legs were perpendicular to the truck and so both sets of wheels went over both of my legs," said Taylor.
Carmyn's leg was broken and ankle sprained. No one was charged. Carmyn's thoughts on Kyle's Law?
"It would generate more potential for violence because now you’re going to have people fearing to attend protests and demonstrations, something’s that guaranteed to them by the Constitution, and so then they’re having to show up armed, and then them showing up armed just gives these counter-protestors, these people of ill will, all the more reason to show up and instigate that violence," said Taylor.
But Dahm disagrees.
"No I don’t foresee it increasing any sort of violence in any manner," said Dahm.
Kyle's Law, up for debate in the next legislative session.
"We want to make sure that the people of Oklahoma if they have to use self-defense that they are not going to be prosecuted for political reason," said Dahm.
