Ottumwa Law Enforcement asks for support on new CAD dispatch - ktvo.com

OTTUMWA, IA — The Ottumwa police department asks for the city's support in a new computer-aided dispatch system.
Tuesday night, law enforcement presented to the City Council a new Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.
The new system would allow authorities to get alerts on those they pull over.
“Right now, we have no idea if we pull over [someone] and they have civil papers that need to be served or weapon permits or different things like that—this [system] would allow us to have those flags and have that information,” said Chad Farrington, Ottumwa Chief of Police.
Ottumwa police chief Chad Farrington said the new system would be a great time saver.
“Right now, in our current situation, if a sheriff’s deputy pull’s somebody over—maybe they located weapons on them or guns and they bond out on a charge—unless that deputy walks that information physically over or sends an email, [no one else] has that information,” said Farrington. “Now we have an Ottumwa police officer maybe stopping that individual a couple of hours later, not having that information upfront.”
Several council members were in favor of the system, with Matt Dalbey saying this has been an issue since he first became a part of the council, almost eight years ago.
“This is the first time I have ever seen—even in this short presentation—has opened a lot of doors and opened my eyes to all the functionality that is in here,” said Matt Dalbey, Ottumwa City Councilman. “I really cannot believe we have not been any closer to something like this in the past.”
Eventually, law enforcement wants to look at using American Rescue Plan (ARPA) funds to pay for the system, but for now, they just want support.
Farrington said the dispatch would be shared with the fire departments, EMA, EMS, and jail.
