Over 140 locations partner with local law enforcement for Drug Take Back day - fox23maine.com
PORTLAND, (WGME) - In Maine, collection sites at over 140 locations partnered with local law enforcement agencies from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Those participating included the University of New England’s School of Pharmacy, where students, like Ally White and Shelby Lane, were there learning and helping out to one day educate others on drug take back safety.
“It’s really important for us to learn it ourselves so we can properly inform patients on how to properly dispose of medications,” said White.
“We can use that in our future careers,” said Lane.
Maine’s Resident DEA Agent, Michael Wardrop, emphasized the importance of drug take back safety:
“The importance of getting it out of your household is so it doesn’t become a problem, where someone wants to break into your house and take your controlled substances. Also, so pills don’t get into the hands of a youth or toddler if they ingest it, and they become sick, or something worse, and become hospitalized.”
If missing Drug Take Back Day and finding there are still items that need to be disposed, there are a few safety departments in the state, including Scarborough, which have drug take back boxes open 24/7 year round for the public to drop in unwanted drugs.
“It’s really important to also keep those medications, and as soon as you’re done with them, to turn them in so they’re not lingering around,” said Scarborough Police Lt. Tim Barker.
