Personal details are now protected by law for charitable donors in New York - FingerLakes1.com

The personal information of donors who donate to organizations with charitable status is now protected by law.

Those that make donations will have their names, addresses and phone numbers sealed from the public.

Governor Kathy Hochul signed the law last week and also made it so charitable groups must file duplicative records through the Department of State and the Charities Bureau.

The reason for the law is because the release of those personal details may lead to donors choosing not to donate money.

The law went into effect immediately.
