The Plano Police Department has issued a warning about a phone scam that involves callers pretending to be law enforcement.

The scam’s twist is that the callers are able to manipulate the caller ID so the call appears to be coming from a legitimate phone number. For example, the caller ID can show the words “Plano Police” although the call is not coming from the police department.

“The scammers have used the names of actual Plano Police personnel and ‘spoof’ caller identification so the numbers of actual law enforcement agencies will appear on the victim’s phone,” police said in a social media post.

The crime is impacting other area police agencies, as well, the post states.

Here’s how it works:

  • Scammers call victims, identify themselves as law enforcement, and claim a warrant is out for the victim’s arrest. Often, the callers will claim the warrant is for unpaid tickets or failure to appear for jury duty.
  • Victims are told they can resolve the issue by obtaining a pre-paid money card and calling back with the card number. Once the card number is obtained, the money can be accessed from anywhere in the world.

Police said anyone who receives one of these calls should hang up and not use the call back feature.

Residents should instead call the Plano Police Department at 972-424-5678 to determine where a police employee was the actual caller. If the call was fake, residents should then file a complaint about the call.
