Prominent anti-mask mom fired from NYC Law Department job - New - New York Daily News

An attorney for New York City’s Law Department who moonlights as an advocate for lifting the toddler mask mandate was fired from her job Monday after ranting at Mayor Adams during a press conference.

Daniela Jampel has worked for the Law Department since 2016, according to city payroll records and her LinkedIn profile. She has also become a prominent figure in parent-led protests since 2020 to expand access to in-person schooling and relax mask rules for kids.

The Law Department, which represents the Adams administration in court, has recently been defending a lawsuit filed by parents alleging that the city’s mask requirement for kids under age five is unconstitutional.

On Monday morning, Jampel got access to Adams press conference by posing as a journalist and then grilled Hizzoner on his decision to keep the toddler mandate in place despite previously saying he planned to lift it if cases stayed low, according to a Law Department spokesman.

“What is the irreparable harm to children aged 2 to 4 to take off their masks, just as they do in Long Island, just as they do in Westchester and when will you unmask our toddlers?” she asked.

The spokesman said the decision to terminate Jampel had already been made prior to the stunt, based on her “troubling claims about her work for the city Law Department.” The spokesman didn’t immediately give specifics about those claims.

“Today’s events, however, which include her decision to lie to City Hall staff and state she was a journalist at today’s press conference, demonstrate a disturbing lack of judgment and integrity,” the spokesman continued. “As of today, she is no longer an employee of the Law Department.”

Jampel didn’t immediately comment on her firing, but told a reporter during a rally calling for an end to mask and vaccine mandates outside City Hall Monday afternoon that she made her appearance as a “private citizen.”

“The mayor lied,” she said. “He reneged on his promise. He told us 10 days ago he would unmask our toddlers. He had a celebratory video he posted on Twitter where he bragged about unmasking our toddlers, then he just pulled the rug out from under us at the eleventh hour.”

Jampel later stuck her tongue out at a Daily News reporter when they crossed paths in City Hall Park.

Jampel and other parents who showed up to rallies with signs like “Mayor Adams is the new COVID variant” are furious over his decision last Friday to reverse his plan to lift mask requirements as of Monday. Adams and Health Commissioner Ashwin Vasan say they chose to keep mask rules for kids under five in place because toddlers are too young to get vaccinated and case numbers are ticking up citywide due to the highly-contagious BA.2 variant.

Adding to the confusion, a Staten Island judge struck down Adams toddler face-covering mandate on Friday afternoon, calling it “arbitrary, capricious, and unreasonable.” But an appeals court judge quickly reversed the ruling later that night, allowing the policy to proceed.

Jampel said she couldn’t believe Adams “raced to the appellate division to have his lawyers argue that there would be irreparable harm if our 3-year-olds were allowed to go to school without their masks on.”
