Proposed Warren Co. septic inspection law to be discussed - Sun Community News & Printing

QUEENSBURY | Warren County officials are seeking public opinion regarding a proposed shoreline septic system inspection law via two public hearings and an online survey, and they urge county residents to participate.

The first of the two public hearings is to be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17 in the Lake George Town Hall at 20 Old Post Road during a meeting of the county's Septic Inspection ad hoc committee.

The second public hearing is to be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 19 in conjunction with the county Board of Supervisors' monthly meeting in the Warren County Municipal Center at 1340 Route 9 in Queensbury.

Upon sale or transfer of properties on or near county waterways, the law would require inspection and certification of septic systems that are within 250 feet of shorelines. The waterways specified in the law are Lake George, Schroon Lake, Brant Lake, Loon Lake, Lake Luzerne, Friends Lake, and the Schroon and Hudson rivers.

Board of supervisors chairwoman Rachel Seeber expressed support for the law’s objectives.

“Protection of our waterways is a vitally important issue for all Warren County residents and visitors, and this proposed septic inspection law will take great strides toward improving oversight of potentially problematic septic systems,” she said. “But we also want to make sure that all who would be affected and all members of the public have their opportunity to weigh in on this proposal.”

The objective of the law is to protect groundwater, surface water bodies, and soils from contaminating exposure to excess nutrients and pollutants. Because of inadequate design, maintenance and operation, all septic systems have the potential to contribute pollution and harmful nutrients to the waters of Warren County, county officials have said.

Previous public meetings on the proposed law were held in Horicon and Queensbury.
