Publisher's File l Difficult days or 'Murphy's Law?' - Citrus County Chronicle

Trina Murphy - Publisher
Trina Murphy

I am sorry to say we at the Chronicle have had some incredibly difficult days. Some might conclude it is directly related to Gerry Mulligan’s retirement or possibly it’s “Murphy’s Law.”

Let me assure you, there is never a dull moment in the newspaper business.

Challenges such as new and complicated programs, computer glitches, 19 months of COVID, you name it, we’ve had it.

I am convinced that either I am being spotlighted for “Candid Camera,” or it is just an evil initiation that all new publishers are required to endure to see if we will crack … or cry. I haven’t done either.

During the past three months, I have had my hands pretty full with new responsibilities as publisher for the Chronicle. It seems now is the right time to introduce myself to you.

I’m a Citrus County girl, my family moved here in the mid-'70s when I was 7, I attended elementary, middle and high school in Inverness, and I am now raising my family here. My kids walked the same school hallways and sat in the same classrooms I did many years ago.

My father was well known in the automotive business and over the years, my family owned multiple businesses in the county. I’ve watched our county grow from a tiny country town where everyone knew everyone — and everyone knew my daddy — to the much larger county it is today.

I have a vested interest in this community and the important role our newspaper plays in delivering local news and assuring our community thrives. My passion has been, and will continue to focus on, what is best for Citrus County.

A little more about me, I have two beautiful young adult children who are currently enrolled in college and one mildly annoying New Yorker husband. After working hours, I’m a fitness trainer and enjoy the heck out of yelling at my students at my small business, Citrus County Jazzercise. Nothing can top a stressful, busy day like a dozen burpees and 30 minutes of cardio.

I have been at the Chronicle for 31 years, with most of those years spent working closely with Gerry “Poop in the Shoe” Mulligan. He has been mostly patient while teaching me the importance of community involvement, the role our newspaper plays in the community, the right way to run a newspaper and how to take care of our employees. Gerry leaves really big shoes that I know I will never fill, but I vow to do my best in filling my own shoes.

We strive to provide a quality product and provide quality customer service although it seems we’ve missed the mark recently. We value our readers and we appreciate your dedication over the years and I look forward to serving you in the years to come.

While I have spoken with many of our readers I’m always available if you’d like to call me and share your thoughts or concerns. Call me any time but if you can’t find me here you might just see me on “Candid Camera.”
