Readers respond: Ballot postmark law is bad idea - OregonLive

Watching much of the rest of the country switch to mail voting in the last election because of COVID-19, I thought: Why don’t states just copy our system? In Oregon, we all knew you had to mail your ballot about a week before Election Day to ensure it was counted. If you forgot, you just went to a drop box by Election Day. Much of the angst across the country in 2020 was caused by rules in states such as Pennsylvania that allowed ballots to simply be postmarked by Election Day. This meant they could trickle in for a week or more before a winner could be named. Now our Legislature has decided to change our mail ballot law to follow this unnecessary and unwise rule. Vote-counting dragging on for days or weeks will be the result. Unfortunately, anyone who tries to repeal this new law will be called out for voter suppression and undermining our democracy.
