The longstanding fraud against taxpayers at the Oregon Department of Transportation involves more than just reselling taxpayer-funded equipment (“Former Oregon Department of Transportation workers charged in massive equipment reselling scheme, records allege,” March 15). ODOT has been plagued by contracting irregularities, overbilling and a rogue staff. To truly clean up the department, Oregon desperately needs to add a private right-of-action to its false-claims law. This critical protection of whistleblowers is sadly lacking in state law.
