Research investigates the national crisis of law enforcement retention and recruitment - Police News

Law enforcement retention and recruitment has become a national crisis that is affecting enforcement agencies astronomically. The profession is currently experiencing high retirement and recruitment shortages across the nation.

This study will review why law enforcement officers are resigning. The study will review why police officers are resigning to other fields or accept premature retirement. Research methods will include interviews and reviewing case studies. The findings from this research will encourage solutions to the recruitment and retention dilemma.

The interview questions are separated into two sections, one section is for active law enforcement officers and second section is for retired and potential retirees. Questions focus on officers’ confidence in the profession, liabilities, anti-sentiment, staffing, police reform, political climate, professional loyalty, public and official perception. The interview intends to capture the personal view of how officers perceive the current climate of the profession that is influencing retention and recruitment.

Results, will be documented in a thesis and shared. The research will provide unadulterated outlooks that will provide insight into how agencies can address the ongoing issue. Results can be used to create an open forum of why police are deciding to leave the profession and provide concepts for resolution
