Rockford University celebrates 50 years of equality with Title IX law - WIFR
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - The passage of Title IX focuses on treating students, employees and athletes equally despite gender.
Title IX became law in 1972. Now, 50 years later has launched the careers of many women across the U.S.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Title IX, Rockford University associate professor Cathy Headley organized a one-of-a-kind event to show the impact the legislation has not just in the sports world, but everywhere. Headley says, So it includes sexual harassment, workplace harassments and how can we protect our employees.”
Rockford University students filled Regents Hall Wednesday in support of opening more doors for future generations.
Maybelle Blair is a big fan of Title IX; a law that prohibits sex discrimination in federally funded education programs and sports.
The 95-year-old played All-American Girls professional baseball in the 1940′s and faced many people who felt female ball players were way out of their league.
“Oh my gosh it would be wonderful it would’ve given us all opportunities to get an education like the girls are doing today,” says Blair.
