Roscommon Law Enforcement Serve Turkeys Instead of Tickets - 9 & 10 News - 9&10 News

Two days of turkeys instead of tickets served by local law enforcement in Roscommon County.

This is the 7th annual Turkeys Instead of Tickets campaign. Full ham and turkey dinners are being delivered to nominated residents and unsuspecting motorists during traffic stops.

Sgt. Norm Labonte , Gerrish Township Police Dept, has participated in the event three of his 19 years. Today, he delivered two turkeys to a local duplex outside of Roscommon and two turkeys to very surprised motorists.

“It makes me feel good. It’s something different,” says Sgt. Labonte. “You see something different every day, but a lot of times it’s in the negative. But this is a positive thing that we can do. We’re not all about just giving tickets and responding to incidents we do care of our community and we want to take care of them.”

Sgt. Labonte has delivered meals to 15 families in those three years. He says his favorite memory from the event was the last experience he had during a traffic stop.

“The gentleman was very upset that we even stopped him,” he says. “As soon as I brought out the turkey you could see he had his foot in his mouth and he was very thankful by the time he left. ”

Labonte stopped one unsuspecting motorist off the highway who was having a bad day. The gentleman was surprised when instead of getting a ticket he got a turkey.

“I was not expecting that at all. So that’s just awesome to see him giving back and much appreciation for all the hard work that they put themselves up to do,” said the driver.

The Turkeys Instead of Tickets campaign is thanks to local sponsors and community members. Houghton Lake and and Roscommon Rotary help to supply the turkeys and meals.

“It’s a part of Rotary, we’re a service organization and we support the needs of our community,” says says Susan Tyre, Houghton Lake Rotary Club President. “We have a lot of needy people in our community, and I think it it is in the spirit of the holiday season and it puts the sheriff’s department and the police department in a different light for many people.”
