Sacramento officials approve increased waste fee ahead of compost law soon taking effect - KCRA Sacramento
SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
Waste fees in the city of Sacramento will increase over the next three years after city officials approved the proposal. It begins in a few months.
The Sacramento City Council on Tuesday voted in favor of the fee increase to largely pay for the new state food waste law that requires cities to collect and compost food waste from customers. The law, which was signed in 2016 by then Gov. Jerry Brown, is aimed at reducing emissions of short-lived climate pollutants.
According to CalRecyle, organic waste in landfills emits 20% of the state's methane, a climate pollutant several times more potent than carbon dioxide. Food scraps, yard trimmings, paper and cardboard — all considered organics — comprise half of what is being dumped into landfills.
While it takes effect this year, Sacramento officials will not start collecting food waste until this July, and to prepare for that change, they are charging $3.83 a month more starting in April.
The waste fee will increase every year through 2024. In total, the decision made by city council members will lead to residents paying $11.49 more a month than they do now.
