Key Facts

It will be his 17th season in the role, which he played from 1994 until 2010, when the show ended.

Law & Order creator Dick Wolf described McCoy as the “ultimate conscience of the show,” and said “very few casting announcements have ever given me this much pleasure.”

The revival will serve as a continuation of the wildly popular franchise, which has spawned several successful spin-offs over the years.

Waterston last appeared as McCoy in an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 2018. He received widespread acclaim during the show’s original run, and was nominated for a Golden Globe, three Emmys and 11 Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Law & Order’s 21st season will premiere on February 24.
