Santa Cops come to town: Lubbock law enforcement treat kids to day out - LubbockOnline.com

Santa Cops, a Hub City Christmas tradition for more than a decade, returned Saturday with local law enforcement professionals taking on the role of Santa for the day.

Members of the Lubbock Police Department, Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office, the Lubbock County District Attorney’s Office and children from Big Brothers Big Sisters enjoyed the day full of shopping, friendship and fun holiday festivities.

LPD Sgt. Timothy Seeley said that this is the 14th annual Santa Cops program where Lubbock Professional Police Officers Association has teamed up with Big Brothers Big Sisters to identify kids within our community, who are part of their program, that most likely would not get a very good Christmas or Christmas at all.

So, they have teamed up with several members of the community and businesses to give the kids a Christmas experience, Seeley said.

This year they sponsored 25 children. Each child was assigned to an officer, who went to their house and picked them up for a fun-fill day with police treating the kids to breakfast, a holiday shopping spree, golfing and more.

When the officers are assigned to the kids, they also bring their spouses and their kids with them, Seeley said. That's where friendships start, he said.

“That gives these kids somebody in the community to look up to,” he said.

Seeley recalled a story from a past Santa Cops in which they had an officer sponsor a kid for Santa cops, and then that officer went on to be that child’s sponsor through Big Brothers Big Sisters. And they're still in contact 10 years later.

“They built that bond because of Santa Cops, and that's what this program is all about - it builds the bonds with the community and to give back,” he said.
