SARATOGA COUNTY (WRGB) - - - The Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Sheriffs’ Association Committee on Policing and Safeguarding Schools (C-PASS) will host the first annual C-PASS School Safety Training Conference over the next few days.

This three-day event, scheduled for February 21st-23rd at the Saratoga Casino Hotel, has drawn more than 120 law enforcement and educational leaders from across the state.

The conference will focus on training for School Resource Officers as well as school personnel through presentations and training exercises that examine and analyze past school incidents; Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training; mental health education; bullying in schools; social media trends; understanding unique needs and topics relative to the LGBTQIA community and students with disabilities; and officer wellness.

Saratoga County Sheriff, Michael H. Zurlo, says this is a first-of-its-kind event and he’s very pleased with the turnout.

“To have 120 of them in this room here out of 300 members that are in this organization speaks volumes of them coming here to see what trends are changing, what they can do differently, and we have some great speakers and presenters that are coming here to talk about in school scenarios that they’ve been involved in. I’m hoping everybody takes something away from this and brings it back to their school district,” said Sheriff Zurlo.

Speakers from across the country will be in attendance, one of them being Jon Romano.

Romano was sentenced to 20 years in prison back in 2004 for a shooting at Columbia High School in East Greenbush. He’ll share his testimony in an effort to stop incidents similar to this from happening again.

Sheriff Zurlo also said this also highlights the importance of School Resource Officers (SRO’s), because of how often they interact with young people:

"They're in the schools, they're dealing with the kids. They're dealing with staff. Parents, parents also. They're at the events at night, PTA meetings, basketball games,” said Sheriff Zurlo.

Livingston County Sheriff Thomas Dougherty says SRO’s can have a lasting impact:

"How many kids do you have a positive impact on? How many kids go left or right in that fork in the road because of your daily interactions?"

We’ll continue to bring you coverage coming out of this conference online and on-air.
