Scott's Law crashes exceed 2020 numbers - newschannel20.com
An increase in Scott's Law crashes is causing concern in Illinois.
These crashes occur when emergency vehicles are stationary and flashing their warning lights on the side of the road.
Drivers are required to slow down, drive with caution, and move over to the other lane if it is safe to do so.
But Illinois State Police say this uptick is fueled by people who aren't moving over.
ISP predicted a high number of Scott's Law crashes this year, because there were already 10 squad cars hit by the middle of February 2021, and the trend hasn't slowed down.
The number of overall crashes involving ISP cars is nearly double what it was last year, but still less than the 72 crashes we saw in 2019.
In 2021, 38 cars have been hit total, compared to 23 in 2020.
We've outpaced 2020 in Scott's Law related crashes as well.
There have been 19 so far in 2021 compared to 15 last year.
Again, that number is still down from two years ago when there were 27 Scott's Law crashes.
But we're also seeing a slight increase in trooper injuries.
Last year there were eight total, with nine troopers injured so far in 2021.
No ISP troopers have been killed in Scott's Law related crashes so far this year.
You could be fined up to $10,000 and get your license suspended if you don't move over for emergency vehicles.
After the law was amended this year, courts can also order community service as a punishment.
