WPDE — If you plan to go out to celebrate the new year, police have one message for people driving that night: "sober or slammer."

Officials said nearly half of all fatal crashes in South Carolina involve an impaired driver.

If you are caught drinking and driving, you can face fines, jail time, and suspension of your driver's license.

Officials want you to plan for a designated driver or use a ride share service if you are going out.

Master Trooper Brian Lee with South Carolina Highway Patrol said "We're gonna be participating in safety checkpoints with other law enforcement agencies. So, we want the public to understand how important it is to have a designated driver. Don't drink and drive during the holiday season."

Nearly 220,000 DUI arrests were made in South Carolina last year.

You can report a drunk driver by dialing *47.
