WASHINGTON (AP) — A South Carolina man pleaded guilty Wednesday to assaulting law enforcement during the Jan. 6 breach of the U.S. Capitol, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.

Nicholas Languerand, 26, of Little River, was one of the rioters inside the Capitol building, throwing various objects at officers with the U.S. Capitol Police and Metropolitan Police Department who were protecting the Lower West Terrace entrance. Those objects included an orange traffic barrier and two stick-like objects.

Based on the size and weight of the objects, plus the speed and force they were thrown with, they were capable of causing serious injury.

Languerand also took possession of a police riot shield and struck it against the ground before holding it in front of him as he confronted police, according to the U.S. Attorney General's office.

He was arrested on April 15 and is expected to be sentenced on Jan. 20, 2022, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

He faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers with a dangerous weapon.

Languerand is one of more than 650 people arrested for their actions during the attack. Over 190 of them have been charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement.

The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the Department of Justice National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section.
