COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCIV) — The Southern Poverty Law Center applauded one decision, then condemned another, reached by the South Carolina legislature on the controversial Heritage Act.

The law, which requires approval by the state legislature to remove monuments or rename buildings, was upheld by the state Supreme Court on Wednesday. In the same ruling, justices struck a provision that requires a two-thirds majority to remove a monument.

“We are encouraged that the General Assembly’s two-thirds restriction to approve a move or name change has been lifted, but remain dissatisfied that the Heritage Act continues to be the law in South Carolina," SPLC Chief of Staff Lecia Brooks said in a public statement.

The Heritage Act came under increased scrutiny over the last several years thanks to renewed focus on the removal of Confederate statues and memorials.
