Southern University Law Center one step closer to developing Shreveport branch - BRProud.com

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — As the Southern University Law Center celebrates its 75th anniversary, it has continued to evolve beyond the Baton Rouge campus.

“What we do is that we are involved in a transformational business,” said Southern University Law Center Chancellor John Pierre.

Pierre said technology, innovation and growth are three areas that have been the focus of the law center since its infancy.

“We have to constantly seek a way to grow what we’re doing,” Pierre said.

Part of this growth has been developing a Southern Law Center campus in Shreveport. They made a step closer to doing just that.

“We’re going to plant the seed for the development of legal education in Shreveport, and it makes sense. You got a whole region of the state that doesn’t have access to legal education,” he explained.

To get the ball rolling on this goal, one professor started teaching courses to students last semester inside a Shreveport library.

“For the first time in the history of the state of Louisiana, seven law students are studying law in Shreveport in their last semester while they’re doing internships in clerkships,” said Pierre.

For those looking to start a business in Baton Rouge, the SULC has provided a valuable resource with their Technology and Entrepreneur Clinic.

“We help small entrepreneurs who want to get off the ground, help them with their incorporation documents, creating LLC, even getting them intellectual property protections like a patent or trademark,” he explained.

Pierre said they will continue to grow and the Shreveport students will graduate this spring.
