Spengler Nathanson Law celebrates 75th anniversary | The Blade - Toledo Blade

The year was 1947. The United States was leading the world’s recovery from the Great Depression and World War II. Locally, the City of Toledo celebrated its role in producing the Jeep — the vehicle that won the war — and launched a new era of economic prosperity and growth. In the midst of Toledo’s exciting development and new direction, four attorneys fulfilled a dream that would help lead the way — Otto Spengler, Joe Nathanson, Bert Hebenstreit, and Joe Heyman. These four partners could scarcely imagine, however, what lay ahead and the gigantic footprint they were about to create in the Toledo area.

On February 1 of that year, the law firm of Spengler, Nathanson, Hebenstreit, and Heyman officially opened its doors. Each partner brought his own set of skills and areas of expertise that created a well-rounded practice. They established a foundation for an influential firm that remains an integral part of the community. In addition to their legal abilities, the four founders also were active in the community, with involvement in organizations such as the YMCA, the Humane Society, the Child Welfare Board, the Toledo Kiwanis Club, and many more.

As time went on, the law firm grew as the City of Toledo grew. In the 1950s, Spengler Nathanson helped create the driving economic development force in the region — The Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority. The firm also provided counsel to the City of Toledo, the Toledo Metroparks, area universities, school districts and local communities, as well as religious and non-profit organizations. Lawyers at the firm counseled countless small, medium and large businesses and individuals, and responded to legal needs both inside and outside the courtroom.

“While our firm initially focused on business and public law, our founders were ever mindful of the changing needs of the community and those the firm was committed to serve,” said David M. Smigelski, Managing Partner. “As a result, the firm grew from our four founders to more than 25 attorneys today, adding practice areas of civil and criminal litigation, labor and employment, education, real estate, wealth and estate planning, and family law. Despite shortening our name to Spengler Nathanson, we still follow the example of our founders --- we remain focused on the community and on local businesses and individuals in northwest Ohio who need our assistance. We are always looking for gifted and dedicated attorneys and paraprofessionals to join our team and continue our commitment to outstanding service.”

As did its founders, Spengler Nathanson today continues to encourage its members to engage in professional and civic service. Seven of its attorneys served as President of the Toledo Bar Association. Others served with the Ohio State Bar Association and the Ohio General Assembly. Still, others became judges in the federal district court and the state appellate and common pleas courts. The firm’s lawyers have also contributed countless hours of pro bono legal work and provided leadership in a wide variety of service, religious, and other non-profit organizations.

After 75 years of experience and deep roots in the northwest Ohio community, Spengler Nathanson remains the trusted source of legal counsel for businesses of all sizes in a variety of industries, for individuals, and for governmental entities. And its prominent trial practice in federal and state courts and administrative agencies means it has earned the right to work on cases with far-reaching and lasting impact.

“From February 1, 1947, to now, our 75-year history can give clients peace of mind in our expertise. They can trust our commitment to bettering our community, and they have our pledge to continually serve their legal interests with the highest professional and ethical standards,” said Mr. Smigelski.
