Reports to:
Executive Director
Over the past four years, the Student Press Law Center has grown in size, budget and scope. With a new strategic plan in place, a dynamic team and ambitious goals, we are looking for a Deputy Director (DD) to develop and execute operational policies and duties, including planning, financial management and coordination of programs and projects. The DD is a critical and trusted leader who will serve as a key partner to the executive director to implement strategy.
The DD will oversee the daily operational functions of the organization and supervise our geographically dispersed staff in coordination with the executive director. The ideal candidate is a seasoned and innovative manager with a proven track record who pays close attention to detail while also focusing on the big picture. We need a manager who has an entrepreneurial spirit and is as comfortable facilitating an all-staff event debrief as they are proofreading a document or celebrating staff birthdays. The DD will drive implementation and integration of our new, two-year strategic plan; streamline human resources and operations functions; build and maintain key internal relationships; and support and direct change management throughout the organization. This position requires the ability to operate creatively, effectively and independently within a fast-growing, fast-paced, multicultural environment. The ideal candidate is someone who, with minimal instruction, can take an assignment and run with it; who doesn’t need constant monitoring (and likes the independence); and who thrives in a dynamic, evolving organization that makes a big impact.
Responsibilities include:
Management and Administration
- Regularly reviewing and updating all organizational procedures, systems and policies to ensure effectiveness, efficiency, compliance and alignment with organizational values and best practices
- Assisting in providing financial and programmatic information for grant writing and reporting to funders
- Supporting the Executive Director in clear communications to the Board of Directors, Executive Committee and all committees including but not limited to preparing materials for distribution to the Board and potentially staffing Board committees
- Managing the organization in the absence of the Executive Director
Strategic Planning
- Leading staff to ensure robust and timely implementation and integration of the 2022 operational plan as it aligns with SPLC’s two-year strategic plan
- Working with the Executive Director and staff to monitor and communicate progress on our strategic plan to internal and external audiences
Financial
- Overseeing monthly, quarterly and annual budgeting; annual audit; tax filings; financial monitoring and forecasting; and preparing reports for the Executive Director, board treasurer and finance committee with the SPLC accountant
Human Resources
- Overseeing human resources and personnel policies, ensuring compliance with all legal and organizational 501(c)(3) policies, and employee onboarding and release
Other responsibilities
- Other duties as assigned

- At least 5 years of demonstrated success in a senior management position for a nonprofit, governmental or similar organization
- Proven ability to develop and lead the implementation of operational plans across a growing organization with dispersed staff

- Strong financial analysis, budget planning and budget management experience
- Experience as a strategic thought partner, engaging in creative, entrepreneurial thinking to execute operational strategies and new initiatives
- High energy, maturity and leadership in a fast-paced environment within a small, dispersed team
