State's Attorney candidate Thiru Vignarajah gets major local law enforcement endorsement - Fox Baltimore
BALTIMORE (WBFF) — State’s Attorney candidate Thiru Vignarajah now has a major endorsement from five former Baltimore City police commissioners.
In a historic moment Tuesday, local law enforcement officials who usually steer clear of the political fray announced with the city's crime rates out of control they can no longer stay silent.
"They’re coming together because we face a crisis the likes of which we have never seen," said Vignarajah, "Help is on the way, hope is on the way."
Among those throwing their support behind Vignarajah includes former commissioners Kevin Davis, Anthony Batts, Gary Tuggle, Darryl De Sousa, and Ed Norris, as well as former Baltimore County Police Chief Jim Johnson.
Pointing to his experience as both a federal and Baltimore City prosecutor, all of them say Vignarajah is the candidate they trust the curb the city’s climbing crime rates.
"It’s my honor to be with them and encourage him along in this great, great noble cause," said Johnson.
"Your passion and your attention to the duty and to the work, it’s going to really make a difference in Baltimore City," said De Sousa.
"You have to treat this as a matter of life and death because it is. That’s what I really like about Thiru best is there’s a plan, there’s a deadline, there’s an actual plan and a goal to drive the murders down," said Norris.
Political analyst, John Dedie is calling the endorsement unprecedented.
"I cannot remember a time that I’ve ever seen something like this happen on a local level in a local race," he said.
Dedie also predicting the heavy hitter’s backing will enhance Vignarajah’s reputation within the Baltimore City community.
Recent polling conducted by the Washington firm GQR and paid for by Vignarajah's campaign claims currently, Vignarajah and the sitting State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby are neck and neck in the race.
However, Dedie says something like this could potentially bring a big boost.
"The fact that they are putting their thumb on the scale and making it clear that they like Vignarajah’s policies and ideas I think is only a help to his campaign. Those kinds of things can give you political traction and momentum to carry you through," he said.
