Stopping holiday porch pirates includes law enforcement, surveillance, overall awareness - KOCO Oklahoma City

OKLAHOMA CITY —

As people shop before Christmas, porch pirates are on the lookout, waiting to swipe deliveries.

The Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office is working to keep porch pirates from stealing your gifts.

As more and more packages are delivered to people’s doors, thieves are looking to take what’s yours.

“I am doing holiday patrols,” said Deputy Kelcey Frazier with the sheriff’s department.

Frazier is out on porch pirate patrol, so you don’t come home to find your gifts gone.

“When you see someone that maybe looks out of place, whether they’re walking behind homes, acting suspiciously, cars parked in suspicious areas, these … are a sense you develop over time,” he said.

But law enforcement can only do so much. One of the best ways to protect from porch pirates is to get a surveillance camera.

“This is an excellent deterrent to keep thefts – burglars – away from property or stealing your stuff, and also it gives us something to identify with,” Oklahoma County Sheriff Tommie Johnson said.

It’s also good to track your packages and talk to neighbors. And if someone does walk away with your items, call police.

“There’s a lot of data tracking that goes with it. We set up patrols based on where we see areas being hit,” Frazier said.

Those areas that are getting hit the hardest will have additional deputies there.

“Some of us will take our notepad, we see a package on a porch, the address and when we come back later if that package is gone, we can document that package is gone,” he said.
